Style

Created in collaboration with W.M. Brown, this version of our perennial Watson coat has been produced in a tweed designed by magazine founder, Matt Hranek. Woven exclusively for W.M. Brown on the isle of Harris, this tweed echoes the autumn landscape of his native upstate New York. The mottled base of brown and green recalls damp earth and fallen leaves with a rust overcheck cutting through like scarlet leaves falling from a changing canopy. These colours feel right at home in this soft but robust Harris Tweed. The relaxed cut of our Watson coat makes this an easy to piece to throw on ahead of whatever adventures await you this season.

The Watson Coat is a raglan style overcoat, so named for its raglan sleeves which curve around the shoulder to meet the collar. This shoulder construction was named for Lord Raglan who devised the style to make a coat easier to slip on and off. When the Prussian collar was later added, the style became known as a Balmacaan - deriving its name from the Scottish estate where the two features were first put together.

Watson hits just above the knee for someone of average height. This classic length suits a variety of body types and styles. The fit is relaxed and comfortable, with enough room for a suit or thick piece of knitwear. The classic Prussian collar neatly frames the face, looking as good turned up as it does turned down. Large internal hip pockets are practical for everything from gloves and a scarf to a paperback or notebook.

Harris Tweed

Harris Tweed is handwoven from pure virgin wool, in crofts in the Outer Hebrides. The wool is taken from sheep with dense and springy wool, resulting in a resilient and robust heavy-weight tweed. Because it is handwoven, the weave is slightly looser than other tweeds, meaning the fabric has a natural movement to it.
