Hugo Covert Coat

Originally designed as a hardy top layer to be worn in the country, the covert coat is an enduring British icon. Made from stout and tightly woven “covert” cloth, the tight and steep twill weave originally helped to deflect errant thorns and brambles while also aiding in wind and rain resistance, keeping the wearer warm, dry, and snag-free. The impressive durability of the cloth is matched in the construction of the coat, with several rows of reinforcing stitches along the cuffs and hem to prevent fraying. A lack of buttons on the sleeves and a fly front originally reduced the possibility of snagging, but also lends the coat a clean, minimal look. While still very much at home over a classic three-piece country look, the Hugo coat also excels as a finishing layer in more tonal, contemporary looks. The subtle shine and darker colours available also make this an excellent addition to one's working wardrobe. Truly a do-it-all piece of outerwear.

Hugo is a classic single-breasted silhouette designed to fit like an overcoat, over a jacket or heavy piece of knitwear. For those who do not intend to layer or prefer a slim fit, we would suggest sizing down.
