Glen House

Built in 1855, Glen House has long been the home of liberal thinking, with William Gladstone having stayed there.

The Glen is a spectacular estate in the Scottish Borders forming a 5000 acre refuge of parkland and woods sweeping up to heather moorland. In the midst of this natural beauty, stands the magical Glen House, built by David Bryce in 1855.

Oscar Wilde stayed for a bit, and had a whale of a time. The House is still standing...

One of the first houses to have electric lighting in Scotland (hydro-electric, from the loch), wax paper was used to insulate the wire... which led to the old house being burnt down. This made it possible for Mr Bryce to build something very special. Thankfully the fire started in the attic, so there was time to rescue family portraits.
